Power to Survive, Cancer Recovery Program
The Power to Survive, Cancer Recovery Program, is a free 8-week program designed for adults who are facing a cancer diagnosis. Participants in the program are referred to The Clark Sports Center’s Health & Fitness Department from physicians at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY. In response, The Clark Sports Center offers the participants who are facing cancer the opportunity to start or continue exercising and recreating to help give them the power to feel strong both physically and mentally. Instruction and assistance is given to participants who will develop their own physical fitness which will help reduce side effects from treatments, improve energy levels and increase self-esteem. In many cases, a sedentary lifestyle was the norm for our participants. Just coming to the Sports Center was a challenge.
During the 8-week free program, all participants are considered part of The Clark Sports Center membership and access is granted to all recreation program areas including Group Fitness Classes. A personal trainer with a background in cancer recovery is provided and offers 2 or 3 weekly appointments that are specific to each individual. Every effort is made to make working out not intimidating and create pathways to take down the barriers to exercise. Throughout the program the participants may experience swimming, rock climbing, bowling, and sports programming as well. Nutritional information is distributed during appointments.
To date, the Clark Sports Center has had over 75 participants referred by Bassett Healthcare with many continuing to pursue fitness and recreation as part of their new lifestyle. Graduates of the program remain Clark Sports Center members and continue to work out individually or in small groups which also addresses social and mental health aspects. A community within our membership has formed and we have seen some wonderful results!
